Thrify Thursday

Welcome to the relocated Thrifty post!

What do you use for your to-go food and beverages?
I use glass (and BPA free plastic when I'm going to an all day event).
Not only is it better for your health, it's better for the environment and for your wallet!
Those cheap plastic options will leach chemicals into your food and stain. You will have to replace these things often making them more expensive in the long run.
Some of the items pictured above were purchased new from Amazon, Target, or the Dollar Store. Some in thrift stores.
Some are recycled from jams or sauces.

Tootsie Tuesday

It's the first edition of Tootsie Tuesday!
Formally Thrifty Tuesday (which will now be Thrifty Thursday) Tootsie Tuesday will be focused on DIY beauty products, fashion, and any and all things related to fabulous style!

Today's post is a tutorial on how to make your own liquid soap.
You can use it as hand soap or as body wash.
I've adapted my recipe from Amy Bayliss.
Amy did the math and says
"This recipe can be made for less than $1.50 and it refills a soap dispenser 6 or more times.
That is 25 cents a bottle!"
The reason I choose to make my own liquid soap is because I usually receive lots of bar soaps in my subscription boxes or I can get them super inexpensively online.
photo 3.JPG

Like Amy, I grated my soap and used 11 cups of water.
The difference is that I used:
a bar soap by Whispering Willow
a perfume oil instead of essential oil
DID NOT USE A BLENDER! I've done this before and it was a mess!
added in some unscented lotion to make it moisturizing
I suppose you could also use coconut oil instead of lotion but I've never tried it.

So that means my recipe looks like this:
11 cups of water
1 bar of all natural soap
1 tablespoon of glycerin
10 drops of perfume oil

bring 4 cups of water to a boil
while waiting for the water to boil, use a grater to shave the soap
once at a boil add the grated soap to the water
whisk until it melts completely
add the glycerin
once the soap is completely melted turn off the heat
add the remaining water
allow to cool for at least an hour
add the essential oils
let it sit overnight
slowly whisk in about a cup of lotion
if it needs a bit of water to thin it out you can add some
if you want it thicker add 2 more tablespoons of glycerin and allow it to sit for a few hours
use either an old hand soap or body wash bottle for storage

Amy says:
For use in foaming soap pumps, add about 1/4 cup to the bottle and add the rest water.
Shake to incorporate it.
I did not try this and I'm not sure if the foaming action will occur with the addition of the lotion.

What do you think? Did you make any changes? Let me know about it!

Me Monday

Happy Me Monday!

Image admired from YouTube

A few years ago, Kimberly Wilson introduced me to Art Journaling. The YouTube link above will take you to her video! I feel in love with visual journaling and began journaling regularly.
About a year ago, I became super stressed out and lost the desire to be creative.
Since my mind shift last week, I find myself contemplating pulling out all of my packed away supplies and playing a bit. I'm also currently thinking about on putting together an Art Journal Workshop for the public to come and experience the process for the first time or meet like minded people and have a place to share the images they create.

My idea for the agenda would be something like this:
Patrons would come into an intimate space lit with yummy smelling candles and full of inviting seating options. (Maybe some floor pillows and/or shabby chic tables and chairs)
They would be invited to help themselves to some hot tea or citrus water
and perhaps even some mini food options.
The workshop would begin with a welcome greeting and ice breaker to get everyone comfortable with the idea of sharing their work and ideas with the group.
I will share a little bit of the history of art journaling and some common practices.
We would then do a short guided meditation where everyone
can dedicate their intentions for the process.
Then everyone will be encouraged to begin playing with their journals
and engage in open conversation.

Some things I'm not sure about yet:
Should I provide the supplies, request they bring their own supplies, give the option of either or?
How much should I charge?
Should I pursue an "Art Journal Club" with a membership fee and a monthly meeting schedule?
Should there be a theme or open forum?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!
If you're local would you come?
Also, how are you creative?
Would love to have a place where you could go on the regular to create amongst friends?

Frugal Friday

Image grabbed from a Google search

Frugal Friday!
Up this week? Don't buy it, MAKE IT!!
DIY is one of the best ways to save some cash these days. Here is a list of some of my favorite DIY projects that save a lot of cash!

Paint your Laminate furniture instead of buying new.

Paint your Fabric furniture instead of having it reupholstered.

Soak your way to an easy green Do-it All Cleaner.

Enjoy some down time after your DIY day with some Lush like Bath Fizzies in a hot tub.

Wellness Wednesday

Image admired on Pinterest

Welcome to Wellness Wednesday folks!
I'm not usually afraid to try something new however I'm often afraid to do it in front of others unless I'm sure I'll be good at it. This is something I'm actively working on. I've been told that I do an awfully good job of hiding my anxiety about my performance fears by friends and family though. ;-) What's my secrete? I have a mantra for situations like this, "Millions of people do this everyday." It doesn't matter what the situation is, I just remind myself that I'm not alone and everyone else (I hope) has survived. So, if they can do it, I can do it!
And you? What's your trick to getting through new experiences?

Thrify Tuesday

Imaged admired from Undressed Skeleton
It's Thrifty Tuesday!

I LOVE breakfast sandwiches! I could eat them for EVERY meal!! I especially love take-out breakfast sandwiches... Sadly my wallet (and tummy) does not. So I was thrilled to stumble across this amazing blog post from Undressed Skeleton about make ahead DIY breakfast sandwiches! So easy and so delicious! I will be going meat free and using the fresh veggies from our garden which will make these beauties even less expensive! I'm thinking I'll tie them off with baker's twine instead of individually wrapping them and placing them in either a huge glass container or zip bag to freeze.

Me Monday

Image admired on Pinterest

Happy me Monday!
For over two years I've been toying with the idea of starting my own business. This week life has thrown me a curve ball and I so wished I had started the very first day the idea popped into my head. So here goes! I'm going for a career change with less responsibility at my "day job" so I may spend more time being creative and putting together my game plan. I've already begun looking for new day job opportunities and I'm really excited about some of my leads! But, I'm not letting the new day job search stop me from working on my solo efforts as often as possible! It's time to strike that perfect balance between being just committed enough to the steady pay check to have good marks while still having the time and energy to do what I love! I found a great article called 8 Tips to Leave Your Day Job and Start Your Business that I may read everyday!

Me Monday

Image admired on Pinerest
This is SO like my Mom!!!

Happy Me Monday everyone!

This Mother's Day weekend was a typical one. My Mom spent Saturday with co-workers while my Dad and I went to a bbq with family friends. On Sunday we went to EPCOT at Walt Disney World (our favorite place in the world). It rained a bit but otherwise it was a nice time. Dad and I got Mom a Camile charm bracelet and loaded it up with Disney charms. She loved it! Opal, my min pin got me a collectable Belle doll. I think my Mom may have helped her pick it out! tee hee

Something I realized yesterday thought was that we haven't really ever been a holiday celebrating kinda family. I mean we always go through the motions (mostly for Mom's sake now that I think about it) but as far as Dad and I actually getting excited that any particular day or birthday is coming up or feeling like we need to make plans, uh uh... I think it's because I believe that people should be nice to one another, give to charity, go above and beyond for loved ones, and so on ALL THE TIME! Why wait for a particular day of year? Why does there have to be a "reason" to do something for or spend time with someone?

So in realizing my opinion driven, anti-plan, lackadaisical mentality about holidays, I'm devoting my "Me Monday" to a new outlook. Just because a holiday is the designated day to do something doesn't mean I can't do it all the time. Therefore, I can do whatever it is whenever I want AND on it's special day! The next holiday coming up? My birthday! :-) So, instead of waiting until June 4th roles around I thought I'd give myself a little love today and pamper myself with some amazing products!

First, I'll light my new Coco Butter floating candle from 1 Love Candles
I actually received this is my first dottiebox and LOVE the smell.
Next up I'll do an allover body scrub using a homemade Vanilla Latte scrub!
I used the recipe in the link but with vanilla instead of peppermint.
I like to sit in the tub with the scrub on for a minute or two to allow the oils to soak in a bit.
In the mean time, I'll dab on a bit of The All Natural Face lip exfoliate I received in their Beauty Box. I'm uber excited about this because the jar came stored inside of a zipper bag because it's so oily, the jar leaks when on this side!!! I can't wait to put this on my lips!
Finally, after I've rinsed all the scrubs off, I'll lather my nails with Nail Enhancer from Nail Butter! This stuff is amazing! I'll be honest and say that the smell does not make me swoon with delight. However, after one overnight use I can already begin to tell a difference in my nails!

The holiday after my birthday is Father's Day. So, I'm going to get cracking on helping Mom make this day a special family day for Dad too!

How about you?
How did you spend Mother's Day?
What will you do on Me Monday?
Any great Father's Day ideas to share?

NomNom

Diva of a Cook - "Ooh La La!" - Recipe Binder
Image admired on Zazzle
 Hello folks!
Last week I shared with you that I'm testing a cookbook idea and wanted to use the blog as a playground for it! My idea for the book is to have a collection of weekly activities that make cooking healthy homemade meals easy for the single millennial female. I also plan to sprinkle in some homemade beauty and cleaning products and perhaps even a couple of crafts! Each week’s menu will include a step by step guide for making everything from start to finish in as little time as possible. Therefore, steps for several different items may occur simultaneously or intertwined. I've included a sample of what I have so far here:

Week 1 Menu:
Green Beverage Starters:
Green Banana Smoothie 3 days & Green Lemonade 4 days
Breakfast:
GF V Pancakes Bite with yogurt 4 days & Oatmeal Bite with Fruit Salad 3 Days
Lunch:
Vegetable Soup 4 days and Garden Pepper Salad 3 Servings
Dinner:
Pizza Pockets 3 days and Savory Berry Salad 4 days
Dessert:
GF V Frozen Chocolate Custard

Batch Cooking Day 1 Game Plan:
Total Time: 6 hours hands on all the way! It’s a great workout!

Recipes:
Green Banana Smoothie 5 Servings
Green Lemonade 4 Servings
GF V Pancakes Bite 24 Servings
Fruit Salad 3 Servings
Spring Vegetable Soup 4 Servings
Garden Pepper Salad 3 Servings
Pizza Pockets 8 Servings
Savory Berry Salad 4 Servings
Baked Oatmeal 24 Servings
GF V Frozen Chocolate Custard 8 Servings
Wash all fruits and vegetables and lay out to air dry.

Gather the following items:
Knife
Cutting Board
Measuring Spoons
Liquid and Dry Measuring Cups
3 Ice cube trays
Blender
2 Bananas
Agave
Spirulina Powder
Baby Spinach

4 2 cup freezer safe containers OR 1 large freezer safe container for custard.
4 Avocados, mashed

Salt

Start the Green Banana Smoothie by placing the following into your blender:
3 Bananas
3 tsp Agave
3 tsp Spirulina Powder
3 Cups Baby Spinach
3 Cups Blueberries
3 Cups Milk
(Optional) 1 Mango, 1 Orange, 1 tsp Flaxseed Oil, Couple of Strawberries

Secure the blender lid tightly and blend on low until smooth. Poor smoothie into ice cube trays (should fill 3 trays & leave you a bit to sip while you cook!). Place trays into the freezer.

Rinse the blender.

Start the Frozen Chocolate Custard by placing all of the following into the blender:
4 avocados, smashed
2 cup Milk
2 cup Agave
2 cup Cocoa Powder
4 tsp Vanilla
1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
2 pinches of Salt

Thrifty Tuesdays

Image admired on Pinterest
Hello loves! Sorry this is coming to you so late. Allergy season is kicking my behind!
For this thrifty post I want to share my book bargain sources with you!
First up, Amazon.com! Not only are the  hardcovers and paperbacks usually cheaper here than at a traditional bookstore but the Kindle books are always cheaper and there's also the used option!
Personally I like to have the physical books versus the Kindle digital editions. Therefore I usually end up purchasing used books from Amazon. The quality is typically very good and the price is a fraction of the new ones!
My next favorite source is library sales! If your library doesn't have store running continuously with their gently used books for sale they will probably have one seasonally.
My final favorite place to shop for books is thrift shops! My local Goodwill has a huge book selection and always has great new titles and stock.

Me Monday

It's the 2nd edition of Me Mondays!
Last week, Marie Forleo posted a Q & A Tuesday video that was exactly what I needed that day! I saw the above image on Pinterest and pinned it on my "Tats" board, but realized as I was listening to Marie that I had not fully embraced the message. I've been uber focused on what is wrong with a piece of my everyday and it's taken a toll on me for sure. Immediately after watching the video I sprang into action and began making progress towards getting myself out of the funk. Thank you Marie for reminding me that there is always a silver lining!

How is your attitude right now? If you spent a little time redirecting your negative thoughts to neutral thoughts and then maybe even all the way to positive, would it make a difference in your health?

Me Monday + New Feature Sneak Peak

Happy Me Monday!
I had an amazing Sunday full of cooking! Now, to be fair I must say that I really don't "cook." I like takeout A LOT!
Volcano Sushi for one makes for a happy Gina! Alias, I need to finally come to terms with all that is wrong with takeout EVERYNIGHT:
  1. Lots of waste involved with the containers, bags, plastic utensils, paper napkins…
  2. It gets expensive!
  3. The calories add up quick!
  4. You’re never really sure what’s in it… hmmm…
  5. I’m a super picky eater and often end up modifying everything.
So it is time for me to get over all the problems I have with cooking at home:
  1. It’s so time consuming.
  2. Recipes are often for 4-8 people and I am solo,
  3. The grocery store packages things for families. Again, I am solo.
  4. The only place to get organic options by me is an hour and a half round trip. So again time consuming to grocery shop and uses a lot of gas.
  5. You have to do the dishes… my least favorite chore.

All that said, I’ve decided to devote a 6th post every week to healthy cooking at home for one! Stay tuned for this week’s post coming soon! For now here is a peak at my events!

Frugal Friday

http://ladolcevitra.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/frugal-money.jpgImage from CareerGirlNetwork
Every Friday I plan on posting various resources, tips, and tricks for keeping your finances in check!

Some of my favorite sites are:
The sites about page states "We’re a vibrant community of motivated women who are ready to take charge of their lives and their finances. Money has meaning when it gives you the freedom to live an inspired life. We are here to make sure we do just that, together." I love when I get a new email from them and often share the emails with friends and family!

This is a one stop shop for all of your money saving needs! She has a great layout and her updates are always fun and trendy!

This site is full of amazing recipes made for very little dough! Not only are they budget friendly, they are usually quite healthy as well! Here's her about page info: "Unlike other budget food blogs, I actually do write this from the point of view of someone who is broke and who struggles constantly to make ends meet, so what I talk about is what I actually experience. I am brutally honest (sometimes to the point of slight embarrassment) and mince no words when it comes to how I come up with a new dish or what new plight has made me even more broke than before. In short, what you see is what you get on PGEW. Nothing fancy, nothing special, just me."

My financial focus right now? Wait 24 hours before clicking "checkout" for the online shopping cart. My ModCloth basket is uber full right now, but I'm resisting! Happy saving... and spending... :-)

Tenderhearted Thursday

Quote of the Day: Be Kind
imaged admired on ellentv.com

I'm dedicating Thursdays to being kind and titling them (rather appropriately) "Tenderhearted Thursdays."

I encourage you send positive energy into the world
be selfless
give thanks
pay it forward
give back...

What will I do? I'm sending handwritten "love notes" to my best friends via snail mail on pretty stationery. Don't have pretty stationery? Check out PaperCulture!
